How did this grant contribute to the realization of your project in regard to artistic exchange, local cultural development and/or the promotion of cultural diversity?

After playing several times in Istanbul with the trio consisting of Israeli saxophonist Tom Soloveitzik, American cellist Kevin William Davis, who was based in Istanbul at the time, and myself on electronics, we had the desire to play in Israel. We traveled to Israel soon after the huge crisis of the flotilla shootings. As a citizen of Turkey, I was concerned about possible difficulties I could face at the border, as the relationship between Israel and Turkey was at its lowest point at the time, with even rumors of a potential war. All my fears were proven wrong and I had no difficulty entering the country (leaving was another adventure). Tom, Kevin and I come from three countries where freedoms are always in dispute, perhaps now, after 7 years, even more so. Therefore as three free improvisers, we named our project "Three States of Freedom". We played three concerts in Tel Aviv, and one each in Jerusalem and Haifa. Besides playing as a trio, we have also played with amazing musicians from the scenes in those cities. Some of these collaborations turned into long-lasting friendships and even collaborations. For example, I shared the stage with saxophonist Ariel Shibolet in Tel Aviv, and now I am in a quartet with him. The tour resulted in an album called Three States of Freedom. It was recorded in Jaffa in an afternoon.

How does exchange, networking and international contacts contribute to the development of your artistic and cultural project?

It's all about those three. My current project UnStumm (unstumm.com) could not be realized without these.
