How did this grant contribute to the realization of your project in regard to artistic exchange, local cultural development and/or the promotion of cultural diversity?

RCF created a unique opportunity in order to present my research to the wider audience and meet incredible people throughout the 4th Valletta International Conference: 'Living Cities, Liveable Spaces: Placemaking & Identity'. As the City of Valletta was declared European Capital of Culture (ECoC) 2018, I've found the perfect place to present my research project outcomes for the first time and show the results to the diverse audience. I've learned a lot about the culture as well as the cultural policies around the ECoC politics. These issues debated within the context of citizen engagement and sustainable city development. I was a panelist for one the sessions which themed under 'Future Cities' in order to question how the concept of liveability will change in the future, particularly in light of new technologies and new tools for citizen and social engagement.

How does exchange, networking and international contacts contribute to the development of your artistic and cultural project?

As an independent researcher, I am grateful to RCF for supporting me and funding my attendance to the conference. The experience was helpful not only in terms of learning new things and opening up the conversation but also because it gave me a good networking opportunity. We discussed the future possibilities with peers and networked around the wide range of people from different background and countries. Meeting international colleagues who concerned with similar issues encouraged me that knowledge exchange is so powerful to understand the needs of local communities.

Can you elaborate on the learning and knowledge you have gained and shared throughout this experience?

During the sessions, it was amazing to explore research, policy and particularly practical, grass-roots examples from different researchers, academics, policymakers, cultural practitioners, urban planners and designers, activists and community members, combining policy and strategic aspects to practical, on-the-ground perspectives. This experience was a great example of using culture as a diplomatic tool shape and turn the cities into a more vibrant and communal place with the participatory approach. I also encouraged to explore more about the potential of civic activism for the city, social well-being and even for the economy and tourism in order to create the more efficient strategy of the city is based on people, change, and cooperation with a touch of utopian optimism.
